About Art&Craft/Social Sessions

Art&Craft/Social Sessions

The objective of having art and crafts and social sessions is to make the sessions more fun, interesting and 'targeted' in the sense that we make/practice something and use/showcase them later, either in another session or as we did in Arts Buzz every year. :)

This time, some of us came up with the idea of preparing a mini music performance with the residents, using simple beats from self made instruments such as shakers, clappers and bells etc, to be performed during our own X'mas celebration on the 24th Dec 2011!

That is the basic idea! We have allocated several sessions for this purpose but have yet to come up with any concrete plans yet! Anyone interested in taking the lead or helping out to plan for this please volunteer yourself! It does not necessarily be a music performance actually, just something that can be incorporated as part of the program during X'mas, or even later during CNY if more time is needed for preparation. :)

Tentative Involvement:
22 October (Preparation)
26 November (Preparation)
24 December (Actual performance day!)

Arts Buzz Exhibition 2009

A Tribute to Michael Jackson
(Part write-up for the exhibition)

Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) is certainly no stranger to most people. While the ‘King of Pop’ is famous for his many songs and awesome dance moves, he is also a notable philanthropist, donating millions of dollars and raising more through his own Heal the World Foundation.

While the main objective in this exhibition is to showcase some of the art pieces done by residents from Institute of Mental Health (IMH), we would also like to take this opportunity to make a tribute to Michael Jackson for all the good and wellness he had contributed to the world at large. Henceforth, art pieces are arranged around the theme of some of his famous songs.

HEAL THE WORLD
Heal the world – a notable song by Jackson promoting care and concern for every other human being in the world. It seeks to discourage wars, unrest and other forms of ‘unnecessary’ conflicts in the world. Through his Heal the World Foundation, Jackson envisioned to improve the lives of children all over the world. Featured around this theme are art pieces by IMH residents promoting various desirable practice. We hope that these art works will be positively impactful to some, as were most of Jackson’s inspiring songs to all.

EARTH SONG
This is a song that overtly deals with the environment and animal welfare. While we are all human beings, we should not forget and abuse the environment and other living beings around. The art pieces, as with the Earth Song, seek to bring across the idea that we are blessed with a beautiful environment and habitat to live in. We could, and should, sustain this blissful presence for the sake of humanity and for all our future generations.

BLACK or WHITE
Black or White is a song that promotes racial unity. While racial harmony is of great concern for many multi-racial states, residents of IMH face yet another form of prejudice – the social stigma of being mentally ill. Black or White, healthy or sick, male or female alike, we hope that through this exhibition, we are able to remove part, if not all, of the stigmas that exists within minds of all who have some sort of prejudice or fear towards people with mental illness. We would like to show that mental patients are also capable of many things, such as doing art work in this case, just like, or even better than many others.

Chalet 2009 :)

Had a great time with everyone at the Sentosa chalet :)
Thanks for the wonderful memories...such as roasting the marshmallows (heehee) and enjoying the bbq food together, by the swimming pool. Even the preparation process was filled with fun! (like using the Capsicums to add colour to the kebabs ....) And also not forgetting the nice mango puddings prepared by Maybelline :)

Playing the Citadel and Quelf game rocks! "Damon!" "Whatever!" :P To think anyone would stay up overnight to play board games, and visiting the 'Chinatown' cafe for XXXX times during the stay etc.. But these unique memories are those created during chalets bah ^.^

Being with a bunch of volunteers let me realise how simple happiness in life can be :)

Unofficial updates...

Here's just an unofficial updates to keep everyone in the loop of what's happening since there's no sessions these 2 weeks! (hopefully sessions can resume soon :))

Take your time to read!

Alright..
1) We are considering leaving a box of materials in the ward so in case of any circumstance that we are unable to enter the volunteer room again we wouldn't be too lost~ (will talk to the ward NM again though)

2) I think we decided to do away with 'Dumpling festival' celebration, which is supposed to on the 28 May (sat: 30 May), partly becos we can think of any suitable food and partly as the visitor ban has not been lifted so far.

3) A few upcoming initiatives:
Juxtapose 2009 (18 -21 June)
-not involving our residents for the sci centre outing anymore, but all volunteers are still welcome to join :)
http://juxtapose09.blogspot.com/
Sports Carnival 2009 (unconfirmed)
-nothing heard out as of now. waiting for reply. :)
Beach Outing for the residents (planning to request either: 25 july or 1 august)
-Should be at ECP since it's been done there before! But nothing is confirmed yet at this stage, so feel free to voice out any comments NOW! xD (btw who planned for the previous sandcastle building outing the last time??) Those who went before still remember what you all did? :)
Arts Buzz 2009 (7-21 Aug)
-any suggestion for a theme that we can put up during the exhibition are welcome! will be at the same arts buzz area in NUS central library as usual~ =D

4) Normal sessions:
Ok some stuff that has been on hold for some time:
IT day
-Volunteer you laptops/console ppl! Can't cfm a date now until after the visitor ban has been lifted. But let's try to get it done this june/july! =D
IR funfair
-Been postponing due to lack of helpers! So the next time you see this better come for session k! xD
Art work day
-Need a theme first! Suggestions pls! =)

5) Chalet/Outing!
Ok now as far as i checked, at least costa sands (pasir ris) chalets are still well available for july. it's $191-248 for NTUC members for 2 nights, and erm..like double for non-members..whaha..

So it's unwise for students to book any chalet basically!! xD

I would suggest something like friday night - saturday go session together - saturday night.
OR
Just saturday night after session.

Probably last week of july or first week of august? depending whether we should put it the same day as our proposed ECP beach outing or not.

Any preference? Anyone can help book =D (actually i think i can book under my dad's name if it's NTUC chalet..i think..lolx) Anyone got cheaper source? (though price doesnt really matter to me..lolx)

just post any comments on the wall!

cheers~
wee boon

Never judge a book by its cover

Hey all, this isn't an update. But here's a classic case of "never judge a book by its cover". Bet many of you would have heard of / seen this one, but I still thought I'd share. :) This is one amazing song and now it's sung by such an amazing voice. Touching manz... Haha... enjoy!

Sorry couldn't embed the video here. Lol.

Updates 4th April 2009

Hey guys, it's me again.

But then not much updates from me this week, as I haven't really been going for sessions the past few weeks. Some of you might know why, but anyways, that's not the point.

This week was with achievers, went to the bird park, end up getting caught in the rain. *brrr* Super cold mens.

Oh yes, in future, whenever we have debrief, let's do sound out of anything that happens in the ward, or anything that is on your mind, just do sound us off. It doesn't just help us improve, but can help to prevent things from happening as well (assuming these are things that we'd hope won't happen).

Meanwhile, I wish all those having exams the very best. Do work hard during this period, all our well wishes are with the lot of you future Singaporean leaders. Emm, you peeps WILL stay in Singapore right?

I'm still waiting for suggestion for the mid year, chalet or what? Damon and me are on standby to work on getting a chalet in July if the bulk of you are agreeable. As for paintball during the chalet, I really need to work on getting a minibus if we're really going to look into that suggestion. But it'd be nice.

Alright, nothing much else from me. If anyone has any updates, please feel free to add on. Otherwise it'd be tooooooooooooooooooooooooooo quiet here.

Cheers !!
